Missed the Ship

All aboard means all aboard. Here is what to do if you are left on the pier.

All Aboard Means All Aboard

Every port day ends with an all-aboard time, usually printed in the daily program and on your cruise card or app. Ships run to tight schedules with pilots, berths and the next port waiting, so they rarely hold for late passengers.

If You Are Running Late in Port

  • Call the ship or the port agent immediately; the number is in the daily program. Save it in your phone each morning.
  • Keep moving toward the pier; ships sometimes delay briefly for a known late group, but do not count on it.
  • If the ship has gone, contact the port agent, who represents the cruise line ashore and can advise on rejoining.
  • Keep your passport or required ID with you if the line advises it, as you may need it to travel to the next port.

Getting Back to the Ship

Catching up usually means a flight, ferry or long drive to the next port, plus a hotel night, all at your own expense unless insurance covers it. Immigration rules can complicate things, especially outside your home country, so let the port agent guide you. Once you rejoin, settle any costs the line charged to your account.

Plan generous buffers on your own tours: aim to be back an hour before all-aboard, and choose operators that guarantee to return you on time. Our sister site Shore Activities lists excursions with ship-friendly timing.

Missing Embarkation

Missing the start of a cruise usually comes down to a delayed flight. Fly in the day before, ideally earlier for long-haul trips or winter travel. If you are stuck, call the line at once: there may be an option to join at a later port, at your own cost and subject to documents. Travel insurance with trip interruption or missed connection cover can make a big difference here; our sister site Cruise & Travel Insurance explains the types of cover.

Missed Ship Questions

Will the ship wait for me?

Not usually for guests on independent tours or exploring alone. Many lines say that if a tour they sold runs late, they will wait or help guests rejoin the ship; check your line’s terms.

Who pays to catch up with the ship?

If you are late through your own plans, you normally pay for travel and hotels to reach the next port. Some travel insurance policies cover missed departures for covered reasons.

What if I miss embarkation day?

Contact the line immediately. You may be able to join at the next port at your own cost, but this depends on immigration rules and the itinerary.
