Two Places Bags Go Missing

Luggage problems on a cruise usually happen in one of two places: on the flight to the port, or between the pier and your cabin. Each has a different fix.

Your Bag Did Not Arrive at the Airport

  • Report it to the airline at the airport before you leave, and get a file reference number.
  • Give the airline your ship name, sailing dates, ports of call and a phone or email you can check at sea.
  • Tell the cruise line or guest services as soon as you board; they may be able to help track or receive the bag.
  • Buy essentials and keep receipts for the airline and your insurer.

This is the strongest reason to fly in the day before your cruise: an extra day gives a delayed bag time to catch up.

Your Bag Did Not Reach Your Cabin

Bags handed to porters at the pier are delivered to cabins over the afternoon and evening. If yours has not arrived by the evening, contact guest services; bags with missing or damaged tags often wait in a central luggage area. Bags with prohibited items, such as some appliances or alcohol beyond the line’s allowance, may be held for inspection.

Tag clearly

Attach the line’s luggage tags with your cabin number, plus your own tag inside the bag.

Carry on essentials

Medicines, documents, a swimsuit and one change of clothes go in your hand luggage.

Photograph your bags

A photo of the bag and its contents speeds up any search or claim.

Know the rules

Check the line’s prohibited items list so your bag is not held back.

At the End of the Cruise

Most ships ask you to put large bags outside your cabin on the last night. Keep valuables, medicines and travel documents with you. If a bag is missing in the terminal, report it to cruise line staff before you leave the pier. For a packing list built around carry-on essentials, see our sister site Cruising Checklist.

Luggage Questions

Can the airline deliver a delayed bag to the ship?

Sometimes, if the ship is still in port or calls at a port the airline can reach. Give the airline your ship’s name, itinerary and the line’s port agent details, and keep checking.

Who pays for replacement clothes?

Airlines may reimburse reasonable essentials for a delayed bag, under their own rules. Travel insurance with baggage delay cover can help too. Keep every receipt.

Damaged Bags

If a suitcase arrives broken, photograph it before you unpack. Report airline damage at the airport, and ship or pier damage to guest services on board, and ask for a written record. Some lines and airlines exclude wear and tear, so expect questions about the bag’s age.
